Chapter 10 Summer Festival
With Kandaâs transfer to our department and Mishimaâs strange outburst in the cafeteria, it had been an emotionally exhausting weekâbut now, it was finally over.
I started the weekend by spending so much time in bed, even I could tell I was oversleeping. Sayu woke me up every day during the week, but she didnât on weekends, no matter how much I slept.
I took advantage of this and went back to sleep two or three times until I worked up the energy to get up naturally. Before I knew it, it was already past three PM. Iâd gone to bed just after midnight the night before, which, according to my simple calculations, meant Iâd gotten around fifteen hours of sleep. As expected, I wasnât tired in the slightest after that much rest, so all it took was a shake of the head and I was wide awake.
Lifting my head and looking to the side, I saw Sayu lying on the carpet, curled up into a ball like a roly-poly.
ââ¦Good morning, Sayu.â
âMorning,â she replied without looking at me. She sounded unusually drained and seemed distracted.
âWhat time did you wake up?â
âHmm?â
âDid you only just wake up?â
âHrrrmâ¦â
After asking her a few questions, I realized how strange she was acting. She was clearly not paying attention. I drew in a short breath, then called out her name, a little louder this time.
âSayu!â
âHwah!â
This seemed to startle her. She turned to face me, looking surprised.
ââ¦Good morning,â I said again.
âG-good morning.â
âWere you sleeping?â
âN-no, I was awake. Sorry, I was just kinda spaced outâ¦,â she replied. I smiled wryly. It was obvious she was more than just kinda spaced out.
âIs something on your mind?â I asked as I got out of bed. Sayu slowly got up as well, though the look on her face was difficult to describe. Then, a few moments later, she gave me a goofy, relaxed smile.
âNah, not really,â she said.
ââ¦You sure?â
The way she was acting seemed a little off, but I didnât think there was any point in pressing the issue after sheâd insisted there was nothing on her mind, so I decided to drop it.
I thought about bringing up a new topic of conversation instead but couldnât think of anything, so I just sat cross-legged on my bed, leaning against the wall. Sayu had also sat up and was now staring at the floor, spacing out again. Maybe because sheâd been lying down, her hair was matted against one of her cheeks, and I ended up staring at it. It would be easy to brush aside with my finger. As much as I wanted to, my body still felt sluggish from sleeping, and I couldnât muster the energy to stand.
Suddenly, Sayu looked up, and our eyes met. We stared at each other for a few seconds. She still had a vacant expression on her face, and even though we were looking into each otherâs eyes, it seemed like her mind was somewhere else.
âWhen I think about going home to Hokkaidoâ¦â
Sayu began speaking out of the blue, startling me.
